"But that's not an authentic Chinese dish.."
"Of course not! But I can't get americanized Chinese food at home!"
In today's foodie culture, there's no room for outdated, americanized Chinese food (especially since California is even home to chain restaurants that are direct imports from across the Pacific). And indeed, most of the clientele you'll find at Little China Kitchen are people you might call.. typical "American." But that doesn't mean the food isn't decent for what it is!
For dinner, we started with the mu shu chicken, a stir-fried mixture of shredded green cabbage, onions, carrots, egg, and thin strips of chicken breast, served with four tortilla-like pancakes on the side, along with a thick sweet and savory sauce. Who would've thought that self-rolled Chinese burritos could be so tasty? We also had the vegi cashew chicken, a stir-fried dish with imitation chicken (made of tofu), along with snow peas, carrots, mushrooms, jicama, garlic, and plenty of cashews! While tasty, this dish was covered with an overwhelmingly sweet thick brown sauce, and it was hard to appreciate some of the other flavors.
As far as americanized Chinese restaurant goes, Little China Kitchen definitely stands out in a couple subtle ways--the dishes here don't have MSG (a big thing for someone sensitive like me), and you can even order many of the stir-fried dishes to be made without oil and with chicken broth instead! So again, while inauthentic to the max, the food here just isn't bad for what it is! And what better way to finish it off than with that "classic" Chinese dessert.. a fortune cookie? -

My boyfriend and I came here for the first time and we would come again. We usually come to down town San Mateo and we try most restaurants.

They cut the size in half and I didn't notice until I got home the to go container is usually double size I fell disrespected i always spend money there .. welp now I have to find a new
So I went back and ordered the same thing now he explains why the container was smaller but I was tired and when I got home I realized what he said ... so when he explained why the container was smaller ... but I ordered MANY TIMES without leeks which he said that was the reason why it put into a small container and that he never cheat customers... but like I said I've ordered that dish many times before the same way and the container was never small until that one time ...so yea...I WISH I WOULD HAVE TOLD HIM THAT RIGHT THEN AND THERE but like i said I was tired and didn't really catch what he said ... but I'm sure he'll read this since he told me he knew I wrote the yelp review ... but it's okay I'll never go back again after years of going there ......don't get me wrong the food is great
